Preventing Bed Bugs
Bed bugs are and increasingly common problem in Southeast Kansas. They are also probably the last pest problem I personally would want to deal with at my home. Bed begs are notoriously difficult to control. Control methods require extensive work on the part of the pest management professional. From a consumer’s perspective, hiring a pest control company to get rid of bed bugs is one of the more costly (if not most costly) pest control services to purchase.
However, there are some simple things you can do to help prevent bed bug problems before they start. Bed bugs are generally introduced by being brought in from outside. They might be brought in on clothing of someone who has them or in luggage after travelling. Here are a few simple precautions you can take.
- When you travel, check the bed in the hotel room. Bed bugs harbor around head boards, seams in mattresses and box springs, and bed frames. Remove the sheets and look closely at the bed in your hotel room to make sure there is no active infestation. If you notice small dark spots of staining or other evidence of bugs on the mattress, it’s time to ask for another room. Google “bed bugs” for images of bugs and staining on mattresses so that you will know what you are looking for, but recognize that the images you find on google will be more severe than what you will likely find on a hotel room mattress.
- When you return from travelling, take your dirty laundry immediately to the washing machine. Make sure to dry them in the dryer after washing them. The heat from a cloths dryer will kill bed bugs.
- If you know or suspect that someone you know has bed bugs, you may not want to have them spend a lot of time at your home. This is probably one of the most common ways people get bed bugs. Bed bugs often travel on clothing. When someone you know comes to visit, and they have bed bugs at home, they can easily bring bed bugs to your home.
There is probably no sure fire way to guarantee that you will never get bed bugs, but these simply steps will go along way towards decreasing the odds that you will have to deal with this hard-to-deal-with pest problem.
